Before I launch into what’s going on at the Club in January there’s a few things to mention:
The first is re subs etc for the New Year. I’ve had a few emails re folk wanting confirmation of membership rates, so I asked Mary for the figures:
Rates are £160 for under 65s £139 for Over 65s £118 for those living 15 miles or more away.
Payment can be made either on Standing Order OR “posting” in box on the bar OR, if not coming into the club, by post to the Club marked for Mary Dixson, Secretary.
Mary says that payment of £100 re kicking off this year’s bar cards is also due this month, and requires separate payment which the Bar Steward can administer. (Discount of 10% applies once the first £100 has been spent.)
Any enquiries direct to Mary please.
Then I wanted to ask you to take note of two up-coming events:
The dinner being held at the club on Saturday 13 January, and the Supper Club on Thursday 25 January.
They’ll both be good and, further more, we need you there!
And huge thanks again to all those folk who donated gifts to the Christmas Tombola, and to those who joined in merrily and bought tickets. It was once again a great success and has raised over £500 towards Club funds. (And guess what? I’ve already been given some prizes for Christmas 2018. Splendid stuff!)
You’ll note from entries on each Tuesday that the Banstead Bridge Club is still going strong. If you’re a Bridge player and would like to join the group, then have a word with Vic Collier on 07768 990919.
And now for something completely different:
Do you feel you have too much clutter? Got some jeans, trainers, jumpers you never wear? Or maybe there’s an old blanket stuck in the back of a cupboard? This may be the answer then ~ our Barb Warwick is again collecting goods to go to the Manna Shelter at London Bridge. “Every homeless man or woman who goes to the centre is given a hot breakfast and lunch 365 days a year. Hot showers, foot care and advice under a warm, dry roof are the norm. In the basement there’s a clothes store, set out like a shop, where folk can choose coats, shoes etc with some dignity. The centre’s most needed items are trainers, shoes, socks, jeans, underwear, blankets, sleeping bags, toilet rolls, kitchen rolls. There’s also a list re food (it takes a lot to feed 150 folk every day!): Sugar, powdered milk, tinned tomatoes, rice, tinned meat, tinned fish, coffee.” Barb says the folk who work at the shelter are all heroes. They don’t care which passport people have, or what their politics are – they just hold out a hand and bring them into the warm for food, companionship and help.
If you have anything to donate, please either contact Barb directly at email@example.com or you can drop goods off to her home at 32 Wyeths Road, Epsom. Donations can be left in the sideway there daytimes or evenings.
I know that Club members have always been willing to lend a helping hand to those less fortunate but could I please make one stipulation? PLEASE DON’T LEAVE ANY GOODS AT THE CLUB or the committee would have my guts for garters, as my Ma used to say!)

Our aim is to provide fun activities for children and young people whose lives are made difficult because of the physical or mental ill health of family members. At our sessions, members can forget their troubles, meet other young carers and have a great time. It’s all free – fun, food and transport.”
This is an amazing charity which looks after many local children who are in circumstances that, by their very nature, are incredibly difficult.
